“UCR is proud to be part of a network of The Bernard Osher Foundation Osher Institutes (OLLIs) across the nation totaling 124. Started in 1977 by Bernard Osher, a respected businessperson and community leader, the Foundation seeks to improve quality of life through support for higher education and the arts. UCR’s OSHER program offers intellectually stimulating learning experiences that are robust, interactive, balanced, and designed for seekers of knowledge who value their membership in a vibrant community of lifelong learners. The OSHER program aims to engage and provide enrichment to individuals ages 50 and up through courses, conversations, lectures and experiences on a wide range of subject matter. The program attracts current and retired faculty from local and national universities and colleges and distinguished community leaders and other experts who enjoy sharing their knowledge and joy of teaching with mature learners.”
In six week intervals three times a year, my central focus is with Osher. Starting as a student at both UCSD and UCR, It’s been a significant part of my schedule since 2014. At the behest of two of my classmates, I was invited to become an instructor in the Riverside program in 2016. With a primary focus teaching political history, it’s afforded me the opportunity to develop courses that have proven to be of interest to a significant number of the Osher membership. Until the pandemic hit, I had been able to fill classrooms both on campus and the University’s satellite in the Coachella Valley, (Now the Palm Desert campus). Starting in the Fall 2022, I will once again be teaching at both locations. Combined they will mark my 19th and 20th sections in 15 subject areas.
