What’s On the Turntable?

Goin Back

There is not a day that goes by when there is not a song in my head. As always, it’s my memory that’s always “Goin Back.” This time it’s back to my garage band days. Recording background vocals in studio would come later. Regardless, it doesn’t take much for my mind to wander even when I’m not fixing a hole. (Paul will forgive me). No, it could be anything that serves as a trigger. A series of words strung together in common conversation. A melody, a guitar riff, a TV ad, can take me right back when music was everything. It was when we tried to perfectly replicate the sounds of many of the bands of the times. Now, it can be problematic when I forget that I’m in Trader Joe’s and out of the blue, the music loop is sounding out something we used to play. It’s embarrassing when deep down, I know I don’t have my old range. A low voice in a lower key usually gets me by unnoticed but I’ll keep goin till the musics over.

P.S. Even though this was a staple for us, I really needed to be older to fully appreciate the lyrics. I probably enjoy it more now than I did then.

I think I’m going back
To the things I learned so well
In my youth
I think I’m returning to
Those days when I was young enough
To know the truth
Now there are no games
To only pass the time
No more electric trains
No more trees to climb
But thinking young and growing older is no sin
And I can’t play the game of life to win
I can recall a time
When I wasn’t ashamed to reach out
To a friend
Now I think I’ve got
A lot more than just my toys to lend
Now there’s more to do
Then watch my sail boat glide
But every day can be
A magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage
Is all we lack
So catch me if you can
I’m goin’ back
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
Now there’s more to do
Then watch my sail boat glide
And every day can be
A magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage
Is all we lack
So catch me if you can
I’m goin’ back
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
Ah, ah, ah
